4 Minute Read

At Curi Capital, it’s our mission to help clients build true wealth, however they define it. Our team brings the knowledge, experience, and passion to help clients meet their goals through a wide range of financial services and solutions—and we’d love for you to meet them.

Each month, we will engage a different member of the Curi Capital team to learn more about their experiences, their insights, and their perspectives, while providing an opportunity for you to get to know them on a more personal level.

This month, we sat down with Duncan Gibson, Director of Private Wealth for the firm, to discuss his experience helping develop the team from its early foundations, how he finds fulfilment helping people build wealth, and where he finds joy outside of work.

Could you tell us about your role with Curi Capital and what your experience has been like so far?

I’ve been with Curi Capital since its inception and have taken on a variety of roles in the past five years. I was brought on to focus on business development, and my current role is primarily that of a traditional advisor—combining financial planning and portfolio management for our clients. Early on, I had the opportunity to recruit some of the key personnel that makeup our team today. It has been a rewarding journey, and we continue to enhance our platform every day. It takes time to cultivate lasting client relationships, and I believe the success we are having now started with the dedication in our early days.

What led you to your career?

I’ve always had an interest in finance and have enjoyed working closely with people. This combination of finance, business, and taking an entrepreneurial approach in my professional life has led me to where I am today. My role is the perfect marriage of my business-finance interest and helping people build wealth. It’s a win-win for me, and it’s a big part of why I enjoy my work.

What is/are your vision/goals for the firm?

In the short-term I would like to see us hit a billion dollars in assets under management. In the long-term, continuing to build a strong reputation in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic will be key. We are making significant progress each and every day. Our daily growth can be measured in different ways, whether that be our assets under management or client satisfaction.

What sets Curi Capital apart from other firms?

This business is very commoditized due to regulations, so it can be hard to do something that’s completely different, but we standout because of our people, and our depth in team and experience. We serve in a fiduciary capacity for our clients—something not all of our competitors can say. We have the ability to put our clients first in everything that we do. Our access to certain institutional investment offerings is unique; and, being privately owned allows us to take a long-term, holistic view for our clients.

What has been one of the most memorable experiences in your career thus far? How has it shaped you as a professional?

Being part of the team to help start Curi Capital from scratch was certainly memorable. It was hard work to bring in some of our first accounts—convincing people to come on as a client when we had little-to-no assets under management yet. The early years were truly rewarding and spoke to everyone’s belief in what we were doing. It’s been wonderful having a front-row seat in building this team and our firm from day one. The Curi Capital team that continues to grow and flourish is strong. Roles have changed over the years, but our core values have not. It’s fulfilling to see that expansion and our commitment to our mission in action, on parallel paths.

What has been one of the most memorable experiences in your personal life? How did it shape you as an individual?

My family has completely shaped me as an individual. My wife is the foundation of our family, and we have three amazing kids: 5-year-old twins, and a 2-year-old little boy. It’s an accomplishment to make the right choice in marriage and family. In the early years of building the business I was traveling more frequently, spending many nights on the road. Being away at times gives you a lot of perspective on what is most important and why you are doing what you are doing.

What are some of your interests or hobbies outside of work?

I love being engaged with the community and have served on a number of non profit boards over the years. Coaching youth sports teams is becoming an increasingly bigger part of my life. When I’m not doing that, I enjoy doing anything outdoors. I play a lot of golf, and love snow skiing, fishing, and hunting. One of my current goals is to find more time for my personal hobbies!
