Meet the Curi Capital Team: Spotlight on Joe Dillon, Retirement Plan Solutions

To kick off this series, we sat down with Joe Dillon, Managing Director of Retirement Plan Solutions, to discuss how he built his career from the ground up, how focused specialization makes Curi Capital unique, and where he finds joy outside of work.

Could you tell us about your role with Curi Capital and what your experience has been like so far?

My role at Curi Capital is Managing Director of Retirement Plan Solutions. I lead all of our retirement plan advisory efforts—from fiduciary process management, to investment strategy, participant education, and more. My team manages everything related to workplace savings plans, including 401(k)/profit-sharing, pension, and supplemental plans for highly compensated employees.

At Curi Capital, I’ve enjoyed learning more about the practice and business of medicine. Working closely with my colleagues at our parent company has allowed us to customize our solutions and carry out Curi’s broader mission of helping physicians in medicine, business, and life. I’ve also benefitted from being surrounded by extremely talented industry veterans. I feel that we get better as an organization every day.

What led you to pursuing your career?

In college, I was always interested in finance and consulting, which led to starting my career with Fidelity Investments. I found the complexity and niche aspect of retirement plans to be particularly enticing. I enjoyed working with businesses and helping plan sponsors and participants understand the nuances related to their particular plan. This type of work allows me to help  retirement plan committees—consisting of HR professionals, CFOs, and in-house counsel—put a process in place that protects them as fiduciaries and keeps their employees focused on their financial health.

What did you do in your career before joining the Curi Capital team?

Prior to joining Curi Capital, I spent time at Fidelity Investments, Principal Financial Group, and CAPTRUST Financial Advisors. Each organization provided a unique opportunity in the retirement plan space. The breadth of this experience provided the building blocks to launch Curi Capital’s retirement plan advisory business and give my clients the specialized support they need.

What makes Curi Capital different from other firms?

In my opinion, Curi Capital stands apart due to the additional layer of specialization we provide—an outgrowth of our parent company, Curi, who has been serving the physician community for nearly five decades. Whether it’s HR management or captive insurance solutions, we have access to an internal team and network of specialists at Curi who specifically focus on serving physicians and their businesses. It allows us to cultivate more effective solutions, bring key players to the table, and be valuable to a core set of clients for our firm.

We’re also a relatively young firm comprised of industry veterans. Just like the rest of the world, our industry is changing rapidly. We’re focused on innovation and making sure our clients are in a position to take advantage of cutting-edge products and services as they become available.

What is your vision or goals for the firm?

I hope to see our firm become a nationally recognized brand, serving clients in a variety of geographies and professions. We started the practice by serving physicians, and that will always be a key focus for us. And while physicians face many unique challenges, they also experience challenges that are common for other business owners, executives, and high-net worth investors.

What life accomplishment are you most proud of?

While there are many things I’m proud of both personally and professionally, my work with Children’s Flight of Hope (CFOH) comes to mind. Six years ago, I co-founded a fundraiser called “Triangle Hops for Hope” for CFOH, an organization that arranges air transportation for critically ill children to receive medical care. Our first year, we had a little party in downtown Raleigh and raised $20,000. We’ve since grown the event into a local beer festival. In 2019, we had more than 1,000 people attend and raised over $100,000.

I remain on the Board and chair the “Triangle Hops for Hope” fundraising committee. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we couldn’t hold the in-person festival in 2020 but hope to be back and better than ever in 2021.

What are some of your interests or hobbies outside of work?

Being outdoors, traveling, cooking, and chasing around my two toddlers. I spent a decade training for and competing in triathlons, and still enjoy swimming, cycling, and running in a less structured way. I took up gravel cycling a few years ago and have done a few races and “bikepacking” trips.

Prior to having children, my wife and I also enjoyed long excursions exploring Italy, road tripping the West Coast, and beyond. These days we model our trips based on the New York Times’ “36 hours” format—a day or two in big cities like Montreal or quaint small towns like Burlington, VT.

I have a three-year-old boy and a one-year-old girl. One bright spot of the last year has been being able to spend a lot of time with them.
